10 Running Apps to Get You Moving and Accomplish Goals

While training for the NYC Marathon, I’ve needed all the help I can get. I seek advice from friends who have run and google searched every pain as a result from running and best tips to complete a marathon.

As with everything else these days, there are a plethora of apps to assist with running. Here’s a rundown of some of the best running apps I’ve found.

(In no particular order)

  1. Strava: When discussing running apps, most people start with Strava. Strava allows runners, as well as many other activities, to share what they’ve done, compete in challenges, and connect with others. The app provides detailed analytics and route maps.
  2. Apple Fitness: Apple Fitness is my go-to for all things fitness related. My apple watch is synced to the account, which helps record how far I’ve gone, how long I’ve been running, blood pressure, calories burned, and my route. I always use the fitness tracker when I run or go to the gym. I even like to use it on long walks. The app is comprehensive, with activities related to cardio, strength, and even mindfulness.
  3. Map My Run: Formerly owned by Under Armour and recently sold back to its founders, Map My Run helps users track their running routes, distances and performance through GPS technology. The app offers personalized training plans, audio coaching, and integrates well with other fitness devices. Users can share what they’ve done with others in their communities.
  4. Runkeeper: Runkeeper is another GPS-based fitness app that keeps track of running, walking, and other distance-based activities. The app offers insights on pace, distance, and calories burned. Runners can also receive training plans, goal setting, and offers audio coaching. Runners using the app can share and connect with friends, and those in the community can compete with one another.
  5. Pacer Pedometer: This app tracks steps, distance, and calories burned. Users receive personalized fitness plans, guided workouts, and social challenges within their shared running communities.
  6. Couch to 5K: As one can assume with the app name, Couch to 5K is designed to help beginners build up their running stamina. The goal is to complete a 5K race in 9 weeks. The app also features virtual coaching, progress tracking, and assists with motivational cues.
  7. Runna: Runna is a personalized running app for athletes of all stages of training. Goals range from completing a 5K to marathons. The app offers detailed guidance, daily workout ideas, and coaching. Runners can use the app to share their achievements with other runners in their community.
  8. Nike Run Club: Nike is not just a sportswear brand, but also has a variety of apps. The running app from Nike offers GPS-based tracking, coaching plans, and guided runs. The app is for runners from beginner to elite.
  9. Stride: Stride offers users assistance in improving performance through personalized data analysis and real-time feedback. Pace, power output, and running efficiency are tracked. The metrics also help runners with form and energy usage.
