I was with my brother-in-law the other day and he suggested I mix up a Presbyterian Cocktail for my audience since I am Presbyterian. I’m not sure why the cocktail is called “The Presbyterian” and I don’t know where the drink originated from. One of life’s great mysteries. Some liquor historians believe the original version of the drink was called “The Mamie Taylor,” after a singer who enjoyed mixing whiskey with scotch, ginger, and soda.

You can use any whiskey in a Presbyterian. I like to use scotch in my version of the cocktail. You can’t go wrong with bourbon or rye. Another reason I like to add scotch is for a nod to church history, since the Presbyterian Church traces its origin back to 16th Century Scotland and England.

The cocktail is a great summer drink to sip on while in the backyard. It’s light and refreshing.

Cheers.
