Smoothies: A great way toddlers can get the nutrition they need

My 19 month old has suddenly become a picky eater. And it worries me. My other two children were not picky and I never had to deal with the struggles of forcing healthy food into my children. Thankfully my youngest loves smoothies, which is why smoothies have become a welcome addition to every meal in hopes that he gets the vitamins and nutrition that his little body needs.

Along with the typical smoothie ingredients, (yogurt, milk, strawberries, bananas and blueberries) I throw in a handful of spinach into a blender. The spinach goes undetected as it blends with the colorful fruits. Don’t ask for the measurement because I simply grab handfuls and conduct eye tests. On hot days I’ll add ice for an extra chill.

If you have a picky eater, maybe you should try throwing some smoothie ingredients together. And even if you don’t have picky eaters, this is still a healthy drink to keep you cool.

  1. Great idea. My current favorite smoothie (the nutribullet works awesome to pulverize everything), Spinach/Kale, A few cherry tomatoes, almonds/walnuts, flaxseed, splash of POM pomegranate juice (great for masking flavor), apple juice, banana, frozen: strawberries, blueberries & mango or pineapple. Talk about a superfood smoothie.
POM juice and pineapple are the best things for masking the veggie flavors.

  2. Sometimes we add whole wheat germ or oatmeal into the mix, as well. It thickens it up a bit and provides some whole grain action.
