I took my remaining 3 kids that are still at home to the movie theater to see The Marvels. The youngest being 8-years-old and the oldest being 17-years-old. For most Marvel films, the movie is aimed at an older audience. The Marvels felt like the first Marvel superhero film that was made for everyone.
The Marvels bring together the super team of Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau. Billed as a Captain Marvel sequel, this is as much Ms. Marvel’s film as it is Captain Marvel. Ms. Marvel, played by Iman Vellani, is a scene stealer.
The team is brought together once their powers link them after an intergalactic accident. In a nutshell, a bad person from the Kree planet is destroying other worlds by taking their natural resources for their own civilization. The Marvels must learn how to work together in order to stop the bad guys.
Brie Larson once again fills the role of Captain Marvel and Teyonnah Paris plays Monica Rambeau. Each hero gets the moment in the sun as they fight together and individually. There are humorous moments throughout the film and some dramatic moments. Every scene that included Ms. Marvel’s family was my favorite moments of the film. I can’t wait to see what Marvel has in mind for Ms. Marvel’s character arc.
Let’s get to the reason you’re reading this post. Is The Marvels appropriate for kids?
Compared to other Marvel and DC movies, this movie is quite tame. There’s still violence and peril. Nick Fury provides a few swear words. There is no sex or innuendos.
My 8-yer-old was fine seeing this movie, and she’s a pretty sensitive viewer. Parents know their kids the best and know what their sensitivities are. If they’ve seen other Marvel movies and were fine, they should be able to enjoy The Marvels.
