Is Rick and Morty Appropriate for Kids?

A few years ago, my young son turned on the TV and I saw it was a cartoon and figured it was okay for him to watch. As I was cleaning, I heard a character say a curse word, and I paused what I was doing to see if I heard correctly. And then I heard the character make a masturbation reference. I quickly took the remote and turned off the TV. Years later, my older kids were watching the same cartoon, and I sat down next to them as they watched. And I couldn’t help but laugh out loud as I watched with them.

Rick and Morty is a half-hour show about a horrible person who is also a genius and lives with his daughter and her family. He mistreats everyone around him and always ends up taking his grandson on his dangerous missions.

Rick and Morty is not a show that young kids should view. There’s swearing, sexual references, drugs, massive alcohol consumption, violence, gore, and a list of other inappropriate things in almost every episode. I mention cursing and violence, right?  Yet, I think the show is hilarious. Older teenagers and adults who don’t want to grow up are the intended audience and it’s fine for that group. If you’re outside that group, it’s not for you.

Rick and Morty can be found on Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network.

Seasons 1-5 are now available on Blu-Ray.

I have partnered with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment for this review.
