12 Dads to Hike 84 Miles for Charity

dads4kesemDads from all over the country are uniting to bring Camp Kesem to Maryland in honor of Oren Miller, a dad blogger who passed away from lung cancer. During the week of July 10th, I will be hiking 84 miles along Hadrian’s Wall in Northern England with 10 other dad bloggers (and one non-blogging dad) to raise money for Camp Kesem. Camp Kesem is a free camp for kids who have been affected by a parent’s cancer.

Going for long walks is not my thing. I do not hike for long distances. I don’t even like long walks on the beach. Blisters and my pampered feet do not mix well. Also, sleeping in a room full of snoring men sounds terrible. But I care about Kesem and Oren.  Camp Kesem provides kids at over 80 locations with hope that things will get better and that they are not alone in their circumstances.  I can think of no better way to honor my friend, Oren, then to provide hope and normalcy to kids going through a difficult life moment.

Oren Miller was a friend to dad bloggers around the world. He was a great organizer, a great writer, and more importantly, a great dad. I first met Oren at Dad 2.0. One evening, we found ourselves sitting next to one another at a restaurant.  At the restaurant, he told me about a new closed Facebook group for dad bloggers. Who knows if my blog would even still be around if it wasn’t for the support and friendships found in the group.  I owe a lot to Oren and the rest of the dad blogging community.

We chose Hadrian’s Wall because Phil Corless, one of the hike’s organizers, led Boy Scout along the wall several times and knows all the ins and outs of this famous hike.  I had hoped to do more training to prepare for the walk, but having 4 kids leaves little time for exercising. At least that’s the excuse I’m going with. Anyway, very soon I’ll be on the wall and we’ll be sharing our journey on Instagram and Twitter using the hashtags #Dads4Kesem and #TheWalkingDads. Hopefully I will not be sharing any posts about blisters.

We need some help. Actually, it is the great kids at Camp Kesem that need help. And this is where you come in. Please go to www.Dads4Kesem.org and donate money so kids in Maryland dealing with a really heavy situation can go to camp for free.

All proceeds donated will go to Camp Kesem.

Thank you on behalf of the Dads4Kesem team:
