The new Superman movie (2025) is out and I can’t think of a movie that received so much scrutiny before being released. Fans and critics complained about the CGI, casting, and being “too woke.” My concern was Krypto and how he would fit into the story. After seeing the movie, fans had nothing to worry about.
I was one of those fans that were upset about Superman’s recasting. I loved Henry Cavill’s performance as the Man of Steel and I knew little about the new Superman, David Corenswet. But, I trust James Gunn. I loved what he did with Guardians of the Galaxy and even enjoyed the Suicide Squad. Knowing he was in control gave me hope.
Superman is probably the hardest superhero to portray in this modern age. Superman is a “goodie goodie” and rarely makes a mistake. His character is flawless, and almost everyone loves him. In today’s version of heroes, we want them flawed and dangerous. Gunn knew this going into creating a version of Superman who has flaws, but at his core is the old-fashioned Superman we grew up with and love.
To those that believe Superman is “too woke,” get over it. Superman has always been “woke.” Superman fights for the those that don’t have a voice and takes on those that take advantage of others. This version of Superman is the same as all the others. An alien that feels out of place in a new home, but does his best to blend in and add to society. That’s not a new thing. It’s always been his story. If that triggers a viewer, it says more about them than this version of the hero we grew up with.

The movie did a great job of introducing new heroes not seen on the big screen before; Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific. The three heroes bring comedy relief and add to the overall story. I hope Mr. Terrific gets his own spinoff. Guy Gardner provides some of the most entertaining dialogue ever written for a comic book movie.
So, let’s get into why you are reading this story in the first place: Is the new Superman movie appropriate for kids?
There are some violent things in this film. After all, it is a super hero action flick. There are moments I was shocked with, such as people getting shot up close. There’s a lot of action violence and people die. If you have a sensitive viewer, then they might need to sit it out. If they watch other super hero movies, they’ll probably be fine. I brought my 10-year-old daughter to the movie, and she was fine. The movie isn’t anywhere near the violence of Zach Snyder’s version of Superman and it isn’t as dark. If they saw those movies and liked them, they will like this version.
There are a few swear words and an implied sex scene between Lois and Clark.
I really liked the new Superman movie. Didn’t love it, but really liked it. It was a nice introduction to Gunn and Corenswet’s interpretation of the Man of Steel. And the dog scenes were brilliant and my daughter’s favorite scenes of the movie. This will be a movie that will be on repeat in my household for a long time. At the end of the film, my kids and I were happy, entertained, and inspired, which is the whole reason for going to see a Superman movie in the first place.
Similar movies:
Action: Similar to the Captain America movies and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Scary Scenes: There are some intense scenes with monsters, aliens, and gunfights.
Swearing: Similar to the Captain America movies.
Sex: Only implied sex scene. Heavy kissing and you can tell where it leads. Nothing is shown.
As I said before, if your kid watches the Marvel movies, they will be fine with Superman.
Superman is rated PG-13 for violence, action, and language.
