Is The Book of Mormon on Broadway Appropriate for Kids

Is The Book of Mormon okay for kids? I should point out that we’re talking about the Broadway show and not the actual Book of Mormon.

The Book of Mormon has been a constant stay on Broadway since 2011, making it one of Broadway’s longest running shows. During its opening run on Broadway, the show was nominated for 14 Tony Awards and won 9, Including Best Musical. The show isn’t without controversy, with its vulgar numbers, blasphemous content, and for poking fun at the Mormon Church. To the Mormon church’s credit, they embraced the controversy and even took out adds in the Playbill.

The musical is about two missionaries, one confident and ready to save the world. And the other missionary, is a bit insecure and not that bright, but also has a passion to bring his faith to Africa. Throughout the musical, the missionaries are faced with a variety of obstacles, that challenge their faith and question whether they are doing any good by being on the continent.

I had long been intrigued by the show and wondered if it would be too much for my sensibilities. Throughout the show, I laughed, covered my face, and grimaced a time or two. The audience was mostly adult, with a child scattered here and there. Since the show has long been on Broadway and has toured around the world, you probably know what you’re getting into when you take kids to see the show. If you’re not familiar, here’s what to expect.

Cursing: There’s a lot of swearing. A lot. One whole song is about saying the “F” word to God during times of struggle. If you count, there are over 40 uses of the “F” word during the show.

Sex: Nothing is shown, but it’s talked about. There are jokes about sex, body parts,  bestiality, AIDS, and even genital mutilation.

Scary scenes: In one scene, a Mormon missionary has a “Spooky Mormon Hell Dream.” There’s a lot happening in the scene that takes place in Hell. A devil and demons dance around while torturing the missionary.

Another controversy surrounding The Book of Mormon is the depiction of Africans. In the show, Africans are portrayed as unintelligent, riddles by diseases, and being uplifted by their white saviors. I understand the show is a farce, but if bringing younger musical theater fans to the show, it’s a topic for discussion.

The show pokes fun at the Church of Latter-Day Saints throughout the performance and actors have to be at the top of their game to bring the audience along for a wild ride. I’ll never watch this show with my kids. At least while they’re young. Probably won’t watch when they’re older either. If you’re easily offended, then sit this one out and go see Aladdin, Wicked, or The Lion King.
