We grew up with the rhyme, “Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived,” when learning about the six wives of Henry VIII. Many books, movies, and tv shows have portrayed the wives, with Anne Boleyn getting the most attention. The Broadway show, Six, tells their stories in contemporary fashion.

Six first appeared on Broadway in 2019 and has been a mainstay since. The show resembles more of a pop concert than a traditional Broadway musical. Each song is a catchy tune that audiences will be singing long after leaving the theater.

The show is recommended for ages 10 and up and includes songs about infidelity, violence, and sex. The conversations about those things are all in musical form and are not depicted by actions. Some topics might go over younger viewers’ heads, but the subjects are pretty blatant.

The show is on the short side and runs around 80 minutes long with no intermission. It starts with a bang and continues with high-powered performances the rest of the way. There are flashing lights and the music can be loud, so keep that in mind if you are bringing kids with sensitive hearing and eyesight. Children under 5 are not permitted in the theater.
The show is a fun a night out on Broadway and one that I recommend. My 9-year-old loved it as well as my 13-year-old and 18-year-old. I loved it too.
Six is currently on stage at the Lena Horne Theater.
