Is Operation Mincemeat Appropriate for Kids?

There are a lot of wild stories that came out of World War II, but none of them are equal to the weirdness that is found in Operation Mincemeat. The Broadway musical Operation Mincemeat is a true story about an espionage plot in 1943.

Allied forces were struggling against the Axis powers and willing to try anything to catch the Nazis off-guard. British agents decide to throw the Nazis off by dropping a dead body in Spain with fake documents to misguide the enemy. The wild plan even drew the attention of a young Ian Fleming.

Since it is a musical, there are a lot of offbeat characters, emotional ties, and funny moments within the show. Audience members are laughing out loud one minute and then holding back tears the next.

I took my kids to the show, the youngest two being 14 and 10. I wondered if my 10-year-old would enjoy the show, and she loved it. It was hard for the youngest to catch on that 5 actors played multiple roles, but she caught on pretty quickly.

So, let’s get into why you are reading this in the first place. Is Operation Mincemeat appropriate for kids?

I think most kids will enjoy the show. There is talk about a dead body, and of course the war is a central theme, but there is no violence seen. The humor is not crude, and there are few swear words. The dialogue and show move at a fast pace, so the audience needs to take the ride with them to fully enjoy the musical. If you have a kid who doesn’t follow things closely, then they might not enjoy it. As far as sex, language, and violence go, the show is pretty tame.
