Fatherhood, Coaching, and Stacking Cheerios

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Life of Dad and Cheerios. I received compensation for this post; however, all opinions stated are my own

8 years ago, I received a phone call and was asked if I wanted to coach my son’s soccer team. Being the involved dad I am, I jumped at the opportunity to coach my son. Little did I know at the time that coaching a group of kids for 8 years would provide me with so many rewards and challenges.

When I first began coaching, it was all about having fun and keeping the kids active. I threw soccer drills into the practice, but it was mainly about getting the kids comfortable kicking a ball around and getting to know each other. The following season, I added more drills, and then with each additional season, more drills. Finally, we plateaued with the amount of drills and worked more on team building. With a good base of being in shape and drills under our belts, we focused more on game management and strategy.

Each year we built upon the last one. Sometimes, it worked, and we brought home championships. Some years, our season came crashing down.

In retrospect, being a coach is kind of like being a dad. I add one lesson to another and hope things work out for the best. Sometimes though, my hopes and goals come crashing down. But instead of giving up, new goals and lessons are put into play and I learn from previous mistakes.

Building upon lessons learned, and sometimes rebuilding, was motivation for partnering with Cheerios and Life of Dad for their #CheeriosChallenge campaign. If you are not familiar with the Cheerios Challenge, Google Barack Obama and Cheerios Challenge. Basically, you stack Cheerios on a baby or anything else you can find and see how high you can build. It is a fun way to spend a few moments of time. But to achieve a high tower of Cheerios, you need a good base and a balanced surface. Kind of like coaching and being a dad. To be successful, you need to be balanced and have a good base. And when things come crashing down, you start again.

See how high you can stack your Cheerios and capture the moment on social media with the hashtag #CheeriosChallenge.
