We arrived tired, sore from sitting in an airplane for 7 hours, and a little anxious after our plane almost collided with another plane (True story). When we finally reached our hotel, we popped some melatonin to put us to sleep. When we awoke early the next morning, we were jet lagged and exhausted.
When I travel to a place that’s drastically different from my home time zone, I try to jump into something exciting the first day. That way, we wake up and get acclimated to our new time in a fun way. When I was planning our trip to London and looking for a way to kick-start our vacation, taking a speedboat down the River Thames stood out.
When my son and I arrived at Westminster Pier, we were greeted by a friendly employee who gave us great advice for touring London and then provided us with the safety information, a life jacket, and a coat to keep us dry during our speedboat adventure.
There are only certain areas of the Thames that you can pick up speed, so we crept along the Thames while checking out the popular tourist destinations along the river. We got a great look at the London Eye, London Tower, London Bridge, Tower Bridge, Millennium Bridge, House of Parliament, Big Ben, Globe Theatre, HMS Belfast, and many other hot touristy spots. Once we moved way beyond London Bridge, the engine revved up and we flew along the river. Before we went, I had wondered how fast we were actually going to go. Turns out, pretty darn fast.
Our tired faces went from a bleak and exhausted expression to one of excitement and joy. My son and I laughed at each bounce as the wind ripped through our hair. The Thames Jet Experience lasts about 50 minutes and is a fantastic way to see sites along the river. We took great photos and saw some places that we were going to visit while on vacation. But the best part was laughing with my son. When you travel with kids, you want to give them that utter joyful moment that will make them remember the trip for the rest of their lives. My son and I got that moment on our very first day.
If you’re in London for vacation, look into booking a speedboat tour with City Experiences.
Disclaimer: I was hosted by City Cruises, but the story is my own.
