Photos from the Empire Tattoo Festival

All of my tattoos have meanings. I know some people love body art and will put anything on their bodies because that’s what they find beautiful. For me, the tattoos need to have a reason for being there. Most of my tattoos are drawings my kids made. Others are there because at a moment in my life, a lyric from a song or a poem touched me, then became a part of me. To have a place on my body, a tattoo must be inspired.

I also enjoy getting new ink. It’s like a therapy session for me. I’ll sit or recline on a table, and let a tiny needle do its work. I mainly go to the same tattoo artist, so she knows me well, and we talk about life for however long it takes the tattoo to be finished. Also, I find the act of being tattooed relaxing. All of my focus goes into the spot getting inked, which moves away from any stress or pain I’m receiving from another part of the body.

Since my first tattoo, a person’s reason for getting a tattoo has intrigued me. Tattoos are great conversation starters. When the Empire Tattoo Festival arrived in New York City, I knew I need to be there for those great conversations.

I love taking photos that tell a story. When you see a photo of someone with body art or receiving a tattoo, there are many stories being told.

Here are some images I captured while attending the tattoo festival.
