I never turn down an opportunity to tell a story, whether it is with my words or with my camera. When I was invited to photograph Malan Breton’s New York Fashion Week show at the Leman Ballroom, I said “yes” right away.
Malan Breton was born in Taipei and took to acting and dance at a young age. He taught himself fashion and moved up the style ranks in New York City, often incorporating his theater background into his shows. Celebrities have worn his clothing to the Oscars, Tonys, and BAFTA, as well as adorned his outfits in film and television.
I have always appreciated artists’ interpretation of runway shows, but had not shot one until now. I am a storyteller at heart and have grown a love capturing a story within an image. Runway shows are full of separate stories, along with an overall theme.
Malan Breton and CaringKindNYC partnered for his most recent New York Fashion Week show. CaringKind is a nonprofit organization that provides support, education and resources for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and those who care for them. I have written about family members with Alzheimer’s in the past and ran the NYC Marathon last year for the Alzheimer’s Association, so I was thrilled to get the invite to help promote both brands.
Besides the beauty and drama of the runway show, I was pleasantly surprised by the overall kindness and joy that permeated throughout the building. Everyone I talked to was incredibly nice. I’m not sure what I was expecting before the event, but I figured I would be out of place since I came from a travel writing background. That wasn’t the case. Everyone, from the models to my fellow photographers to those in attendance, treated me and others with respect and an overall sense of goodwill.
Since I don’t have a fashion background, I can’t go into too much detail on the style and clothing. With an acting background, I understand drama. The models and the clothes they wore took the stage with power and flare. Each article of clothing was striking and artistic, and the beauty of the models reflected the importance of the moment. I’m sure we’ll see the designer’s styles adorning the rich and famous during the upcoming award season.
Thank you Lawlor Media Group for adding me to the photographer’s row at the show.
