Interviews Parenting

Children & Self-Esteem

Last week, Sue Shellenbarger, a columnist for The Wall Street Journal reached out to me and asked if I would be willing to discuss how I address my children’s self-esteem. Guiding our children’s self-esteem is something that my wife and I have both discussed and view as a high priority for us in gearing our children for adulthood.

As Ms. Shellenbarger’s article, Finding the Just-Right Level of Self-Esteem for a Child, addresses, finding the right balance between how a child sees themselves and reality is important. If parents don’t booster their child’s self-esteem enough, then the child might be faced with a difficult task and not feel able to take it on. If the child’s self-esteem isn’t grounded in reality, however, the child might feel entitled as they reach adulthood and ultimately turn out to be a jerk.

How about you? How do you approach providing your children with a balanced view of themselves? Or is it not something that you focus on in your home at all?   Comment below.
