A Local Visits Madame Tussauds

Madame Tussauds is a selfie lover’s dream. I’ve walked by Madame Tussauds in Times Square many times but never popped in for a visit. I have, however, stopped many times to snap a quick free photo with the celebrity wax figures in front of the museum. In fact, I’ve walked by a Madame Tussauds Museum in many other cities, but never jumped in to take those great selfies that make your friends laugh on social media.

Maybe it’s the snooty New Yorker in me that tries to stay away from the uber touristy Times Square, but for whatever reason, I never went inside. My oldest daughter recently asked me if we could visit Madame Tussauds this summer and one summer morning, we braved the tourists in Times Square, sliding our way between people with their eyes pointing to the polluted heavens, and stepped inside the air-conditioned Madame Tussauds.

Upon entering Madame Tussauds, Kim Kardashian, Tyra Banks, Alicia Keys, and Jimmy Fallon greeted us. Their wax figures, that is. The line moved quickly to get inside and staggered the visitors so as not to bottleneck getting into the exhibits. Madame Tussauds changes every 4 months, so if you are reading this, someone different might greet you and the exhibits will be different.

Before we entered the first exhibit, visitors had to wait by a Studio 54 bouncer, and once inside, guests like Andy Warhol, Diana Ross, and Elton John were ready to take photos. Being a Warhol fan, I had to take a selfie. That room is small, so my kids and I hurried into the next room.

Before I went to Madame Tussauds, I thought it would be a museum with wax statues of celebrities lined up along a wall, and there was that, to a degree. But there’s so much more than that. I didn’t realize there were theme rooms. I also didn’t know you could actually touch celebrities. And some visitors were not appropriate. Nobody in my group, though. Not one person in my group took any inappropriate photos. Not a one. Nope.

The theme rooms on our visit were a club scene: Marvel, Musicians, politics, literary figures, random important people, action movies, sports, fashion, and more. It was fun to measure up against the celebrities to see how much taller or shorter they are than expected. And guess what, Chris Hemsworth and The Rock are bigger than me. Who would’ve thought? There is an open bar in the nightclub room, which would have been fun to grab a drink and mingle with the celebs had it not been 10 am when we visited.

My kids and I had a great time walking around the museum, watching the Marvel 4D movie, and playing a carnival shooting game, which was a little too scary for my youngest daughter. My kids had to tell me who some of the newer musicians were and I told them who some of the older musicians were. We spent over 3 hours inside the museum, which is a long time for my family to be in one place. We laughed as we jumped from statue to statue. The term, “fun for all ages” is thrown around a lot, but Madame Toussauds is fun for all ages. My youngest is 7 and my oldest is 18 and all four of my kids loved the museum. I loved it as well.

Madame Tussauds has 25 locations around the world and now I want to visit them all. Even if it means wading through tourists. New Yorkers, don’t let the thought of slipping in between people that are gawking at the buildings keep you from visiting Madame Tussauds. You’ll have a great time. And for those visiting New York City, if Madame Tussauds isn’t on your vacation wish list, think about adding it. Your selfie game will get the appreciation it deserves.

Lastly, it’s “Tussauds” not “Tussaud’s.” The apostrophe, for whatever reason, was dropped a long time ago.
