Star Wars BattlefrontWhen my wife asked what I wanted for my birthday, Star Wars Battlefront was at the top of my list. I had been hoping for a new Battlefront game ever since my son and I beat a previous Battlefront on the Playstation 2 five years ago. Now we have a Playstation 4 and when we found out that a new Battlefront was coming out, my son and I began to foam at the mouth in anticipation. Our favorite part of the old Battlefront game was the Galactic Conquest, where the Galactic Empire battled against the Rebels. Each team started at one end of the galaxy and made their way across, fighting worlds in hopes of taking them over. The game took a long time as each world was conquered, but by the end, the winner had taken over every world. Many people were just like us and loved this part of the game.

And then we were denied.

I’ll say this right away. After playing the game for a couple of weeks, I’m still glad I got the game for my birthday. It would still be at the top of my list. But it is different. I would have been thrilled with some simple upgrades from the previous game for it to transfer to the new system. Unfortunately, as my brother-in-law pointed out before I received the game, the game is aimed at online play. Not sitting on your couch with your son and battling one another.

There are some missions that you can go on where you can battle someone in the same room, but most of the fun is found online. In order to do that, the user must create an EA account and be hooked up to the internet. So, if the internet lags for whatever reason, it is possible to have some frustrating moments while playing. Or, if you value your privacy and don’t want your children playing video games online, you are out of luck. Also, be aware that after you have spent $60 on the game, it is necessary to purchase add-ons to the game to take advantage of everything the game offers. This is the part that really has me fired up. The game should be complete within itself and EA should not have tried to bleed us fans by teasing us with game play, then asking us to buy more games after we already purchased the game.

My thoughts in a nutshell.

I am having fun playing the game, and the graphics are out of this world. But I don’t know if I will be having the same amount of fun 6 months from now. I am refusing to buy additional options out of spite. And I don’t like playing online. I realize that a lot of people are doing that type of play now, but I am not a fan. The best part of playing Battlefront for me is and always has been, playing on the couch with my kids.

So understand when you purchase the game what you have to do to get the most out of the purchase. Maybe I’ll be forced to go back and change this post later and say how great the options are and how playing online is my new favorite thing to do. But right now, I just want to battle my son and talk trash as we take over one world after another.
